Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology
Abnormalities of the structures of the mouth, jaws and face are collectively termed oral and maxillofacial pathology. These usually require specialised investigations such as imaging and biopsy for diagnosis and treatment planning. Your OralMax surgeon may arrange for you to undergo simple biopsies under local anaesthesia in our procedure centre or arrange a hospital admission for the procedure to be performed under general anaesthesia. The modality chosen will depend on size and site of the pathology and any other conditions you may have.
Pathology in the Oral & Maxillofacial region can be benign (such as cysts of the jaws) or malignant (including oral cancers and other cancers of the head and neck region).
Oral cancers and other cancers involving the head and neck area are managed by Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons within a multi-disciplinary team. Patients will be admitted into a major hospital for treatment and will be managed by an entire team of specialist surgeons, doctors, allied health and nursing staff. Follow-up will be required and arranged accordingly.
