Q. HOW DOES THE CONSULTATION FEE WORK?

If you have a referral letter and x-rays, please bring these to your appointment. You do not need a referral letter to be seen and may self-refer. A valid referral will allow you to claim part of your consultation from Medicare if you are eligible.

Medicare will cover a portion of the consultation fee but not treatment that is classified as ‘dental’. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons perform procedures that are either medical or dental according to Medicare and Health Funds. Your rebate and what you can claim depends on the exact procedure(s) you require. Following you consultation you will receive all relevant item numbers for your procedures which will allow you to check what you can claim and how much you will receive back.

If your procedure is under general anaesthetic, the anaesthetist and the hospital will have their own separate fees. If you have private health insurance you will need to check with your health fund how much they will cover. You may have to pay your fund an excess for hospital admissions depending on your type of cover.

Q. HOW LONG WILL I NEED TO TAKE OFF WORK?

The length of recovery depends on your surgery. Minor surgery can be 1-2 days, wisdom teeth surgery 5-7 days, major surgery 14 days or longer depending to the exact nature of your procedure and any other medical conditions you may have. You will receive a medical certificate to cover you for sick leave during your recover period.
